The Self / Self-Portraits

2011 - Present

In 2011, I began to photograph myself after getting fed up with the images I was receiving working as a fashion model in Miami. Modeling had been my first introduction to photography, not necessarily interested in the craft myself at the time; and those “professional” photos I was told to put in my portfolio to help me grow as a model always fell short to me of truly capturing the emotions I thought I had expressed that day.

Being the hard headed and impatient person that I am, I picked up a camera and began to explore modeling on my own terms. In fact, I took it so far that I even got a Bachelors degree in Fine Art Photography. What started as a form of rebellion against the commercial requests of the fashion modeling industry has since turned into the most long-term art project of my career. Over the +10 years my self portraiture has gone through many phases from instantaneous to high-level production; raw and natural, to conceptual and fantastical. Each phase has been an important part in understanding photography, storytelling, and most importantly my relationship with the inner and outer expression of the self.
